Uncovering The Past
Connecting visitors to this important chapter in Somerset's history, our Roman museum illuminates the original villa discovered on our Somerset estate, dating back to AD351. Resting over the exposed foundations, on stilts, you can view the remains, learn about the archaeological excavation and discover ancient artefacts unearthed on site. Engaging displays and interactive elements bring Romano-Britain to life for all ages, making it the perfect starting point for your grand tour.
Reimagining Roman Britain
Villa Ventorum is a full-scale Roman villa reconstruction giving visitors unprecedented insight into daily life more than 1,600 years ago. Rooms are authentically staged, brought further to life by team members appearing in period costume. Every inch reflects the meticulously researched sights, sounds and atmosphere of a Romano-British household, down to its intricate mosaics, frescoes and garden schemes. Virtual Reality technology deepens the experience, allowing visitors to journey back in time for a day in the life in Roman Somerset.
The Thermopolium
Delight in the flavours and aromas of ancient Rome at our faithfully reconstructed Thermopolium, where dishes inspired by Roman history and literature are crafted with fresh estate produce. Step out into the courtyard of our reimagined Roman Villa for a delicious taste of culinary traditions that have endured for millennia.
Guided by Ric, our resident Roman food expert, each visit invites you to savour authentic flavours while discovering the ingredients, techniques and customs that shaped Rome’s gastronomic world.
